What is The Highlands?
The Highlands is a private residential community in Northwest Seattle overlooking the Puget Sound. The neighborhood's approximately 400 acres were designed by the Olmsted Brothers in 1907 and contain 107 homes, a preschool, several large reserves, a 16 acre park, walking trails and a commons area with tennis courts, playfields, swimming pool, wading pool, bath houses and picnic grounds. Lot sizes range from 0.9 acres to 9.8 acres. Homes date from 1907 to 2014, and many have been substantially remodeled and updated.

How do I buy a home in The Highlands?
Contact a listing agent on the Homes for Sale page and arrange a visit. Buyers are encouraged to tour the neighborhood and its amenities along with viewing houses. There is a membership requirement predicated on owning property.  The membership process is straightforward and welcoming, and more details may be found on the Membership page.

Are there dues and ongoing fees?
There is an initiation fee comparable to most private clubs and an annual assessment which covers a wide range of services and access to all amenities. Fees are voted on annually by the membership. Assessments vary by lot size.  Each home has a Financial Fact Sheet laying out the obligations of the property owner(s). Contact us or your realtor for access to this information.

Who provides utilities?
Seattle City Light provides electricity. Cleanscapes provides recycling and garbage collection. Puget Sound Energy provides gas. The Highlands Water and Sewer Commission provides water and sewer. A variety of providers are available for phone, internet and cable. All utilities are underground.

Are there any lots for sale in the neighborhood?
Yes, currently there are several lots for sale. There are two currently for sale. Contact us for further information.

Can I rent a house in The Highlands?
Yes, the homeowner must receive Board approval before renting their house.

Does Membership include access to the Seattle Golf Club?
No, the Seattle Golf Club was built as part of the overall design of The Highlands but requires separate membership. Many residents of The Highlands are members and the neighborhood enjoys access to the club for some of its signature events.

How is The Highlands governed?
The Highlands is governed by an elected Board of Trustees. The membership approves an annual capital budget. More information can be found on the Community page.

What is the local school district and surrounding community?
The Highlands is located in the Shoreline School District, which Seattle Magazine has twice named Best Neighborhood for its abundant parks, respected school district, and active neighborhoods. Private schools nearby include The Evergreen School and Lakeside School. Both Shoreline and North Seattle are known as safe and welcoming areas with much to offer local residents.

How many children live in The Highlands and what schools do they attend?
There are approximately 50 children between the ages of three and 18 living in the neighborhood. They attend a variety of schools including The Highlands Preschool, Shoreline public schools, Bertschi, Blanchet, Bush, Epiphany, Evergreen, Groton, King's, Lakeside, Seattle Country Day, Seattle Prep, University Prep and Villa Academy.

What are commute times like?
The entrance to downtown Seattle is 11 miles and estimated to be 15 – 20 minutes depending on traffic (from Bing Maps).
